Abitur 5. August 1914&#13;
Drei Tage nach der Kriegserklärung Deutschlands an Russland sitzen die Abiturienten des Ratsgymnasiums über ihren Deutschaufsätzen. Das Thema lautet: „Einigkeit macht stark“. &#13;
Die Aufsätze stecken voller patriotischem Überschwang, spiegeln Siegeszuversicht und die Bereitschaft in den Krieg zu ziehen. Sie zeigen nicht nur die Stimmung des Augenblicks, sondern sind Ergebnis der nationalistischen Erziehung im Kaiserreich. &#13;
Alle Oberprimaner des Ratsgymnasiums meldeten sich freiwillig zum Kriegsdienst, wie auch zahlreiche Schüler anderer Schulen. Die Osnabrücker Zeitung feiert diesen „Beweis herrlicher Tatenlust“ und „Opferfreude“. Viele Freiwillige der ersten Kriegswochen sterben noch 1914 auf den Schlachtfeldern.&#13;
