76 Namen stehen auf der Tafel im Rathaus, mit der die Stadtverwaltung ihren Mitarbeitern gedenkt,
die „für das Vaterland“ starben. Viele solcher Tafeln entstehen in den 20er Jahren und erinnern
öffentlich an die militärischen Kriegsopfer.
Das „Heldengedenken“ wird schon während des Krieges vorbereitet. Religionsgemeinschaften
sammeln die Namen der Toten für Kriegschroniken, Totenbücher und Gedenktafeln, das Stadtarchiv
trägt Fotos und Feldpostbriefe zusammen. Bei besonderen Anlässen werden Gedenkplakate gezeigt.
Nach dem Krieg wird das Gedenken weiter politisiert. Am Volkstrauertag versammeln sich die Feinde
der noch jungen Weimarer Republik. Sie beschwören das „Augusterlebnis“, die Einigkeit der Nation
und das Opfer für Deutschland.
Die Veteranen, die Verstümmelten und die Hinterbliebenen bleiben mit ihren Erinnerungen, ihren
Traumata, ihrer Not und Trauer allein. Eine Generation später bringt ein neuer Krieg Leid und Tod.
Der Zweite Weltkrieg verdrängt den Ersten aus dem kollektiven Gedächtnis.

Drei Tage nach der Kriegserklärung Deutschlands an Russland sitzen die Abiturienten des Ratsgymnasiums über ihren Deutschaufsätzen. Das Thema lautet: „Einigkeit macht stark“. &#13;
Die Aufsätze stecken voller patriotischem Überschwang, spiegeln Siegeszuversicht und die Bereitschaft in den Krieg zu ziehen. Sie zeigen nicht nur die Stimmung des Augenblicks, sondern sind Ergebnis der nationalistischen Erziehung im Kaiserreich. &#13;
Alle Oberprimaner des Ratsgymnasiums meldeten sich freiwillig zum Kriegsdienst, wie auch zahlreiche Schüler anderer Schulen. Die Osnabrücker Zeitung feiert diesen „Beweis herrlicher Tatenlust“ und „Opferfreude“. Viele Freiwillige der ersten Kriegswochen sterben noch 1914 auf den Schlachtfeldern.&#13;
