Viele solcher Tafeln entstehen in den 20er Jahren und erinnern öffentlich an die militärischen Kriegsopfer. Das „Heldengedenken“ wird schon während des Krieges vorbereitet. Religionsgemeinschaften sammeln die Namen der Toten für Kriegschroniken, Totenbücher und Gedenktafeln, das Stadtarchiv trägt Fotos und Feldpostbriefe zusammen. Bei besonderen Anlässen werden Gedenkplakate gezeigt. Nach dem Krieg wird das Gedenken weiter politisiert. Am Volkstrauertag versammeln sich die Feinde der noch jungen Weimarer Republik. Sie beschwören das „Augusterlebnis“, die Einigkeit der Nation und das Opfer für Deutschland. Die Veteranen, die Verstümmelten und die Hinterbliebenen bleiben mit ihren Erinnerungen, ihren Traumata, ihrer Not und Trauer allein. Eine Generation später bringt ein neuer Krieg Leid und Tod.
