Nach seiner Einberufung zum Kriegsdienst diente er als Unteroffizier an der Westfront. Er starb am 15. November 1916 bei Kämpfen im Wald von Saint Pierre. Heinrich Holtkamp setzte sich in seinem Feldpostbrief vom 1. November 1916 mit der Möglichkeit des eigenen Todes auseinander: „Hoffentlich ist Gott mir gnädig, daß wir uns in bester Gesundheit später begrüßen dürfen und uns wieder haben. Sollte es jedoch anders kommen und das Schlimmste eintreten, dann ist an dem schweren Schicksalsschlage auch nichts zu ändern. Es müssen so viele für das liebe Vaterland bluten, und da dürft Ihr auch nicht klagen; denn es ist Gottes Wille, der geschieht. Hoffentlich erlebst du dann an den drei Kindern recht viel Freude. Ihnen verhehle deinen großen Schmerz und erzähle ihnen oft von mir.
