Im Krieg diente er als Oberleutnant im Heer, bis er am 25. September 1915 bei Saint Souplet in Frankreich getötet wurde. Sein Name findet sich bis heute auf der Gedenktafel für die im Krieg gestorbenen Mitarbeiter der Stadtverwaltung im historischen Rathaus der Stadt Osnabrück.
